Rallock BSA .22 SELF LOADING RIFLE

Updated: 2 days ago

The Rallock BSA .22 Self-Loading Rifle is a relatively obscure but respected semi-automatic rimfire rifle produced by Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) in the UK, likely during the mid-20th century. Though not as widely known as some of its bolt-action cousins, the Rallock semi-auto gained a quiet following for its rugged design, solid accuracy, and straightforward operation.

  • Manufactured by BSA 1947-1951 (BSA, also known as Birmingham Small Arms)

  • The BSA Ralock showcased a blow-back hammerless breech block design with semi-automatic functionality. The action mechanism included a blow-back breech block in the shape of an almost quarter-circle segment. This block pivots at the base and locks back when the integrated trigger guard and underlever are pulled down, effectively cocking the rifle. Additionally, this action exposes a storage compartment below the rifle for the fired empty cases.

  • When it comes to firearms as a whole, the Ralock is more than just an old-fashioned artifact; it represents a unique rimfire rifle design that is unlikely to be replicated. With its radial locking action, enclosed receiver, and limited availability, it offers a sense of exclusivity for those who own and collect this rifle.

  • Unlike other rimfire rifles of its time, the Ralcok stands out as an aged example of a takedown rifle with distinctive features extending beyond its disassembly mechanism.

Use & Purpose

The Rallock BSA .22 Self-Loading Rifle was never meant to be flashy — it was a working gun, ideal for:

  • Small game hunting (rabbits, squirrels, etc.)

  • Varmint control

  • Target shooting & plinking

  • Training rifle for beginners

  • Farm & utility rifle — a common tool in rural households

Key Strengths

  • Reliable British engineering: Built with typical BSA attention to machining and barrel quality.

  • Simple & robust design: Easy to field-strip and maintain.

  • Accurate barrel: Known for good accuracy out to 50 yards and beyond — helped by decent iron sights and consistent BSA rifling.

The Rallock BSA .22 Self-Loading Rifle is a classic example of mid-century utilitarian gunmaking. It’s not flashy or collectible in the traditional sense, but it's a reliable, honest rifle that’s still cherished by those who grew up with one on the farm or at the range.

If you find one today — especially in working condition — you've got a practical and nostalgic piece of shooting history. It’s the kind of rifle that still earns its keep, whether it’s knocking cans off a fence or keeping rabbits out of the garden
